Scottish Water is set to begin work on a £2million upgrade to its water main network supplying customers in North Ayrshire.
The publicly owned utility will begin installing nearly two miles of new pipework along the route of the A78 between Wemyss Bay and Skelmorlie on Tuesday 7 May 2024.
Using an open-cut method, the new water mains will increase resilience and improve the quality of supply to thousands of customers in the area.
Scottish Water’s regional affairs manager in the west Georgina Reid said:
“There have been major bursts in the area over recent years and it was clear investment was needed.
“This project will replace the old 6-inch cast-iron pipework and ensure our customers continue to enjoy great tasting water from a resilient and reliable water supply.
“We are investing more than ever before – up to a billion pounds a year – to meet the challenges of increasing demand and climate change.”
The new pipe will be installed along the route of the A78 from just south of Wemyss Bay towards Skelmorlie - rolling traffic management will see 250 metre sections reduced to one lane with vehicles allowed through using a convoy system.
The project is being delivered by Scottish Water’s alliance partner Caledonia Water Alliance and is expected to take 11 months to complete.
