The UK has become one of the first countries in Europe where people will be able to receive flood alerts on their computer, phone or personal device through the Google Public Alerts map.
Work has continued throughout the night to prevent the collapse of a dam wall holding backing water in Toddbrook Reservoir which is threatening to flood the town of Whaley Bridge in Derbyshire.
Heavy rain in northern England and other parts of the country yesterday has caused flooding, road closures and rail services cancelled across the North West, North East, Yorkshire and the Midlands.
The Environment Agency is starting work this week on a new £25 million flood risk management scheme that will better protect more than 1,600 homes and businesses in Carlisle, Cumbria.
Survey works are starting at a listed bridge in Bradford, to create a detailed design to reduce flood risk in the area for the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme.
