Regulation and Legislation
Ofwat has announced its decision to modify water companies' licences to introduce customer-focused principles, describing the new licence condition as “an important addition to our regulatory toolkit.”
New Environment Secretary Steve Barclay has written to water company Chief Executives calling on them to go “further and faster” to secure a measurable reduction in sewage spills in the next 12 months and asking them to respond with written plans by 19th December.
Ofwat has today set out clear minimum standards for water companies to ensure that those customers who need extra help are provided with the level of service they require.
The Chief Executives and Chairs of both Thames Water and Ofwat endured intensive questioning yesterday from the House of Commons Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee in a compelling live evidence session which at times made for uncomfortable viewing.
As of yesterday, the Environment Agency can now impose unlimited financial penalties on companies who pollute the environment.
