NI Water has awarded a management services contract for the collection, transportation and disposal services of liquid sludge worth an estimated £13 million.
The contract covers sludge transportation, disposal and discharge from Wastewater Treatment Works to Sewage Disposal Centres( SDCs). The SDCs are primarily managed by the water company - however some are managed by Public Private Partnership (PPP ) contractors. Services that will be provide under the contract include:
- collection, transportation and discharge of liquid sludge
- collection and transportation of sludge cake for incineration
- discharging collected WwTW liquid sludge
- collection, transportation and discharge of liquid sludge for de-watering
- collection and dewatering of liquid sludge and final disposal in the event of a plant failure;
- any other liquid sludge transport related services
Initial contract period is 2 years with an optional 1 year extension period.
Maghera-based firm RSC Group have been awarded the contract, one of two companies who bid for the work.

Day in, day out, every single night and day of the year, no matter the weather, the successful contractors will work closely with NI Water to make sure sewage is safely taken away from our homes, businesses and public buildings."
