Regulation and Legislation
In an joint letter to UK water companies, the Government, the Environment Agency, the Drinking Water Inspectorate, Ofwat and CCW have called on them to accelerate their existing AMP7 plans – and consider bringing future investment from 2025 and beyond forward.
The water companies in England collectively carried out a total of 3,502,637 drinking water quality tests during 2019 - only 1,509 of the tests failed to meet one or more of the standards set down in the regulations or exceeded a screening value.
The UK Government has formally asked the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) to prepare an independent Evidence Report to support the UK’s third comprehensive assessment of the risks and opportunities from climate change.
The Regulators’ Alliance for Progressing Infrastructure Development (RAPID) has published its forward work programme for 2020-21.
Ofwat has granted Sainsbury’s, the UK’s second largest supermarket, water supply and sewerage licences, with a retail authorisation limited to self-supply.
- Ofwat acts to protect customers by restricting pay-outs to shareholders if a water company is in financial distress
- Ofwat tells CMA - PR19 appeals submissions are ”attempt to unpick selected parts of package without..considering it as a whole”
- MPs warn England at “serious risk of running out of water within 20 years” – regulators have failed to tackle the issues
- Government urged to consider associate membership of EU chemicals frameworks
