Regulation and Legislation
Water sector regulator Ofwat has today announced that it has modified the licences of 16 of the 17 water companies in England and Wales, who have accepted new ring-fencing provisions.
Ofwat has told the Competition and Markets Authority that the appeals submissions by Anglian Water, Bristol Water, Northumbrian Water and Yorkshire Water “represent an attempt to unpick selected parts of the package without necessarily considering it as a whole.”
A new report published today by the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee is warning of a serious risk that some parts of England will run out of water within the next 20 years – and accuses all the bodies responsible for the UK’s water supply – Defra, Ofwat and the Environment Agency –of having “taken their eye off the ball.”
Philip Dunne, Chairman of the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC), has written to the Secretary of State for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) emphasising the Committee’s concerns about industry’s ability to prepare for the proposed transition to UK REACH.
Matthew Steele, Managing Director at Balfour Beatty Gas & Water has told the Competition & Markets Authority that it supports Anglian Water in its challenge that Ofwat’s determination does not provide a balanced funding framework and will not deliver best value for its customers.
